Squid
The Mediterranean squid, also known as the European squid (Loligo vulgaris), is a fascinating cephalopod native to the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent Atlantic waters. Renowned for their agility and speed, these squid navigate the ocean using a jet propulsion system, expelling water through a siphon to dart quickly through their environment. Highly intelligent and adaptable, Mediterranean squid communicate using chromatophores—specialized pigment cells in their skin that allow them to rapidly shift colors and patterns. This ability plays a vital role in camouflage, mating displays, and warning signals. With a streamlined body, large eyes, and ten arms (including two elongated feeding tentacles), Loligo vulgaris is a skilled predator, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and other smaller cephalopods.
